Is the Antminer S5 profitable?

The Bitmain Antminer S5 mines Bitcoin on the SHA-256 algorithm at 1.16 TH/s, drawing 590 W (511 J/TH). At $0.08 per kWh it earns about $0.04 a day but spends $1.13 on power, so it loses $1.09 a day. It only makes money if your power costs less than about $0.003 per kWh.

That puts it #297 of 522 on daily profit across every miner we track, and #261 of 262 SHA-256 miners on efficiency. It isn’t in stock with us at the moment. It’s an air-cooled unit, released in December 2014.
